Dan Burnett has represented clients in litigation before all court levels including several appearances before the Supreme Court of Canada. He has been lead counsel on numerous precedent setting cases in areas such as defamation, free speech, privacy, injunctions and estate disputes. Dan is on the faculty of the UBC Graduate School of Journalism, teaching media law. He is frequently a featured panelist, moderator and lecturer on issues ranging from freedom of information to internet legal issues to libel.
Dan heads Owen Bird's Media Law Practice Group and is a past president of the Canadian Media Lawyers Association. He is annually recognized for his prominence in the area of defamation and media law in both Lexpert, who named him B.C. "Lawyer of the Year" in defamation and media law in 2011, and The Best Lawyers in Canada. Dan is also a leading lawyer in the area of internet law; he was the successful lead counsel on the first Supreme Court of Canada internet defamation case, and was appointed amicus curiae by the Supreme Court on its first case involving a publication ban involving a Facebook defamation issue.
In estate law disputes, Dan handles claims under the Wills Variation Act, disputes over assets and trusteeship as well as issues regarding the interpretation and validity of wills. In other areas of litigation, Dan has been counsel on injunction cases as well as disputes involving health care professionals.
Outside the courtroom, Dan is an avid musician, white water paddler, mountain biker and dad.
